John Williams Lab Paper Accepted into Journal of National Library of Medicine

We’re pleased to share a new research article from faculty member Dr. John V. Williams and his lab, titled “Limited nasal interferon production contributes to delayed respiratory virus clearance and suboptimal vaccine responses,”published in JCI Insight and available through the National Library of Medicine and the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

This study investigates how limited interferon (IFN) responses in the nasal mucosa contribute to prolonged viral infection and weaker vaccine effectiveness. Using a mouse model of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and single-cell RNA sequencing from both mice and COVID-19 patients, the team found that suppressed nasal IFN signaling delays virus clearance. Early intranasal IFN treatment and IFN-adjuvanted vaccination improved immune responses and viral clearance, highlighting potential strategies to enhance mucosal immunity.
