In light of recent news related to the COVID-19 virus, the University of Wisconsin–Madison has implemented new policies to protect the health and safety of the entire campus community. We understand that these rapid changes may result in a multitude of complications for students and families, particularly for those who are financially vulnerable. Many of our students will have unexpected travel costs, limited opportunities to work and earn funds for daily living costs, and/or decreased funding available for basic resources.

Internal FAQs
How are students considered for support?
If a student encounters financial difficulties as a result of COVID-19, they should contact the Office of Student Financial Aid who will provide or direct them to all appropriate resources. Situations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
How will the funds be used?
Funds will be used to support students with emergency situations arising from the COVID-19 virus. Cases will be evaluated, on a case-by-case basis, by the UW Office of Student Financial Aid. If funds are no longer needed to support students through situations related to COVID-19, funds may be used to support other emergency situations in accordance with university policies.
Examples of fund use include:
- Emergency travel needs
- Food or personal items
- Funding for those who are no longer able to work based on closures and other issues
- Housing and moving costs for those who need to move out of the dorms until further notice
- International student needs
How else can I help?
We are asking all community members to help curb the spread of COVID-19 by following CDC guidelines including washing hands regularly, avoid touching one’s face, staying home when sick, covering your coughs and sneezes, and implementing social distancing strategies.
In addition to financial support to the emergency fund, community members can consider supporting The Open Seat, a student-run food pantry on the UW-Madison campus. We expect an increase in demand on these items given the need for students to prepare for weeks without work or the need to self-quarantine. Please contact the Open Seat directly to learn about their current needs.
I know a student or family who needs support or has questions on university policies, financial aid, etc. Where should I direct them?
Please check the UW-Madison’s COVID-19 website for policy updates and encourage students and families to contact UW’s Office of Student Financial Aid directly with financial questions.
